Avodakos (dakos with avocado)
By: Eleni Saltas
You’ve heard of avocado toast, why not try avocado dakos aka AVODAKOS. Dakos is a traditional Cretan meze, but I’ve enjoyed putting a millennial twist on a classic for a more filling snack. Simply top your rusk bread with diced or grated tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil, and extra salt or seasonings to your liking, THEN top with sliced avocados, followed by soft mizithra cheese or feta. Once compiled, top with even more EVOO + oregano. Voila!! Your millennial snack is ready to go.

Good For:
Meze/Appetizer
Ingredients
- 3-4 medium tomatoes, grated
- 2 tablespoons oregano
- Pinch of salt
- 4 Cretan barley rusks*
- Extra virgin olive oil
- 1 avocado, sliced or mashed
- 6 ounces homemade soft mizithra cheese (If you don’t make your own, you can use soft mizithra, ricotta or feta alone or combine them)
- Pitted olives (optional)
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Grate or puree tomatoes into a bowl and reserve juice. Mix in oregano and a pinch of salt with the tomatoes. Set aside.
Step 2
Run the rusks under water to lightly moisten the rusks. Plate the rusks and drizzle a generous amount of olive oil over each one. Spread the tomato mixture thickly over each rusk. Gently place your mashed or sliced avocado. Top with the soft cheese.
Step 3
Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with additional oregano. Top each with an olive if desired and serve.
Recipe Notes
*You can find barley, wheat and rye rusks in Greek or Middle Eastern markets. If not, simply use slices of toasted baguettes.
